Upwork Profile Rejected: How To Get Your Profile Approved
Due to the large number of freelancers, Upwork is now reviewing each registrations (Upwork Profile) based on the opportunities in their marketplace.
If they find out that the combination of your skills and experiences don’t have opportunities, then your registration on Upwork won’t be accepted.
That’s the reason behind it.
But don’t worry…
There are still ways that we can do about it if you are not approved on Upwork.
What to do if Upwork Freelancer registration is not approved / accepted?
Most of the newbies will just quit trying and find some Upwork alternative sites.
Well, that’s one of the options you have.
But if you really want to work on Upwork, then we need to do something.
And if you are asking if you can still be reconsidered….
Yes. You can still be reconsidered for admission on Upwork.
We have 3 options if you want to get approve on Upwork.
- Option 1: Update your profile as you develop your skills and experiences.
- Option 2: Find a client and ask him to hire you.
And the last option…
- Option 3: Ask an agency manager to join on their team.
Option 2 and 3 maybe difficult for newbies, so we are down only to Option 1.
Anyway, by doing this, Upwork can reassess your profile if there are other opportunities for you.
[Option 1]: Enhance Your Upwork Profile
Your Upwork Profile is your way to get more clients. So you need to polish it, and give more details on what you can offer for the client.
Today, I will guide you on how to create an Upwork Profile to get you a better chance to be approved.
Though it is still not guarantee that you will be accepted, as it will always depend on your Skills and Experiences, and in Upwork’s marketplace.
So, I strongly advised you to upgrade your skills as much as possible.
But for now, let’s make sure you know the steps on how to complete your Upwork profile.
Steps To 100% Upwork Profile
- Upload a Photo
- Make a simple Title
- Creating an Overview
- Define your Skills
- Employment History
Try to upload a high quality head shot photo of yourself. Make sure to look nice while being professional on your photo. And don’t forget to smile. 🙂
Make a simple Title
The first thing that client will look at if you are qualified for the work is your Title.
So you need to make it simple, but concise. It is also advisable to put a specific skill or the job you want on your Title.
Creating an Overview
This is the place where the client will know better about you. Most of the clients are attracted to well-written Upwork Profile Overview.
That’s the reason why there are a lot of people receiving more invitations.
In creating an Overview, you need to answer these questions:
- What are your expertise?
- What tools are you good at?
- Make an assurance in the last sentence that you are the best fit for the job.

Define your Skills
Skill is the most important thing to get more jobs. It is not just defining your skills on Upwork, but your true work skills.
The more skills you have, the better your chance to get hired / approved.
I’ve been telling this all over again, “Upgrade your skills”.
Learn new skills…
I know it’s not easy, but you need it.
It takes time, but it will be worth it.
To give you a better view on what skills you need to learn, I have listed the top 20 in demand skill on Upwork as of Q1 this 2017.
- Asana work tracking
- Artificial intelligence
- Rapid prototyping
- Immigration law
- Natural language processing
- Instagram marketing
- A/B testing
- Twilio API development
- C++ development
- Swift development
- Brand strategy
- Marketo marketing automation
- Penetration testing
- Docker development
- Relationship management
- Application security
- AngularJS development
- Accounting (CPA)
- Machine learning
- JIRA administration
I admit that most of these in demand skills are just so hard. But it is your choice on what skills you want to learn or improve.
Well, these are only the top 20 and I know there are still more opportunities out there.
To tell you the truth, I want to study “Instagram Marketing” because of its high demand. Then once I know how it works, I will update my Upwork Profile and increase my rate.
Don’t give up if your Upwork Profile is rejected.
Instead, improve and learn new skills.
You can still achieve 100% Upwork Profile without a Portfolio, but it would be great if you can brag your past work or project here.
This section works the same as your Portfolio. If you are certified on a certain field, then that would be an eye-catching profile from the client’s perspective.
Enter your previous work experience here. If you are a fresh graduate, then you can put in your (OJT) On The Job Training or Internship experience.
For your education, it is not necessary that you need to input all including your primary education history. Your college education would just do good.
You can also check the video below on how to build your Freelancer Profile on Upwork.
Now, once you have updated your profile with your skills and experiences, you can resubmit it for a fresh review by going to Find Work > Profile.
[Option 2]: Find a Client to hire you
This option would be applicable if you already have a client on Upwork, and he/she wants to hire you.
Using the “Bring Your Own Freelancer” feature, clients can directly hire freelancers not currently on Upwork.
Your profile will be activated as soon as you accept the client’s invitation.
But you are only restricted to work with this client only.
And your profile will not be included in the marketplace unless you submit for another review, then accepted.
[Option 3]: Ask an Agency Manager
This works the same as Option 2, but it is not the client who will hire you, instead the Agency Manager.
There are groups or team of freelancers on Upwork, so if you know someone who is an Agency Manager, then you can ask him if you can join their team.
Here’s another tip:
If you think you have the right skills and Upwork still not accepting your application, then you might need to contact their support.
I have read some post of freelancers who were declined by Upwork, but after contacting Upwork support their profile got approved.
So I guess it is worth a try.

I strongly recommend you to find time to study some of the top 20 in demand skills.
This is for you to get more chance of getting approved and getting jobs on Upwork.
And if I will to select what skills you need to study?
It would be Instagram Marketing and Asana work tracking.
Because the rest of the skills take so much time to learn.
I am not saying that you are not capable of it, but if you don’t have any background of these skills, it would be so difficult.
In Instagram Marketing, you just need to know some best strategies on how to market and manage an Instagram account.
Then apply it.
You can even test it your own Instagram if it works.
For Asana work tracking, this is only a small tool to use for tracking the work progress and projects.
More like managing your teammates.
